3 Gopher Wrestlers still fighting for a National Title, including a Waconia native
(Philadelphia, PA) — Golden Gopher superstar wrestler Gable Steveson of Apple Valley won his first two matches yesterday at the N-C-A-A National Tournament in Philadelphia, advancing to the quarterfinal round. Steveson pinned Purdue’s Hayden Filipovich in the opening round before winning by disqualification in the round of 16 over Rutgers heavyweight Yaraslau Slavikouski. Joining Steveson in the national quarterfinals are two of his Gopher teammates. 184-pound redshirt freshman Max McEnelly of Waconia won twice yesterday in impressive fashion to move to the final eight, while 147-pounder Vance VomBaur won twice to also stay alive in the championship bracket. Five more Golden Gophers are in the consolation bracket today. The Golden Gophers are tied for fourth-place in the team chase, trailing Penn State, Nebraska and Oklahoma State. Action resumes today at 11 A-M.
