92-Mile-Per-Hour Winds Batter Eastern South Dakota

Severe thunderstorms brought destructive winds to eastern South Dakota Saturday night, downing trees, damaging buildings and knocking out power.

The National Weather Service says a personal weather station near Tea reported a 92-mile-per-hour gust. The Sioux Falls airport recorded a 72-mile-per-hour gust, while measurements near Harrisburg exceeded 80 miles per hour.

Numerous trees came down in Canton, where power outages were reported. Harrisburg reported widespread tree and fence damage, along with damage to roofs and other structures. Tree and fence damage was also reported in Brandon.

Farther west, strong winds tore the roof from an outbuilding near Parkston.

The strongest winds affected the southern Sioux Falls metropolitan area and nearby portions of northwestern Iowa. Damage information remains preliminary. National Weather Service
