Public DNR Elk Meeting Rescheduled

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resource is holding an in-person meeting on northwest elk management next month in Thief River Falls.

The DNR plans to begin work on developing a “legislatively directed plan to enhance the size and range of Minnesota’s elk population”. Minnesota DNR elk coordinator Kelsie LaSharr says they will be providing an update on elk management and an upcoming research project. The Minnesota DNR has begun reaching out to private landowners in northwest elk range to seek permission to access private properties for the study.

A 2024 amendment to existing statute allows one of the three elk herds in northwest Minnesota to grow an estimated population of 75 elk up to a total of 98 elk to allow for genetic diversification and herd health.

The meeting is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 10th, at Northland Community and Technical College Performance Art Theater, in Thief River Falls.
