Cleveland comes from behind to beat Twins
(Cleveland, OH) — Cleveland’s designated hitter Kyle Manzardo hit a two-run home run off Minnesota reliever Griffin Jax in the bottom of the eighth inning to push the Guardians to a come-from-behind 4-3 win over the Twins. Minnesota held a 3-0 lead after three innings thanks, in part, to a two-run single by Byron Buxton. Jax took the loss, while Cleveland’s Andrew Walters notched the win and Emmanuel Clase earned the save. The 87-64 Guardians lead over Kansas City in the A-L Central is now five-games, while Minnesota’s cushion for the final A-L Wild Card spot is down to a game-and-a-half over Detroit. The Twins are 79-71. Minnesota right-hander Pablo Lopez worked into the seventh inning, but didn’t factor into the decision. Game two of the four-game series is tonight at 5:40 P-M.
(Minneapolis, MN) — The Minnesota Twins are adding a veteran to their pitching staff. The team claimed Cole Irvin off waivers from Baltimore yesterday. The 30-year-old is in his sixth M-L-B season. Irvin is 6-5 with a 4.86 E-R-A in 107-and-a-third innings this season, starting 16 of the 25 games he appeared in. Minnesota optioned reliever Jorge Alcala to make room for Irvin on the active roster and designated minor leaguer Randy Dobnak for assignment. Irvin will join the team tonight and it is believed he will be a reliever, although he could get a spot start or two before the season is over.
