Officials Clarify Incident at Willmar Homecoming Game
The Willmar School District and the Willmar Police Department sent out a press release Monday aimed at clarifying events at Friday’s Homecoming football game.
The release says they’re addressing social media rumors and providing an accurate account of the events that took place.
During the game, the Willmar Police Department was called to assist with crowd control. Upon arrival, officers encountered a male juvenile wearing a ski mask to conceal his identity. When approached by officers, the juvenile attempted to grab an item from his waistband and fled on foot. Officers pursued and apprehended the individual, who resisted arrest. During the process, a boxcutter was found on him.
A second juvenile was also involved, and the situation required the presence of multiple officers due to a large, unruly crowd that had surrounded the officers and security staff.
Social media rumors suggested that a taser was used and a firearm was present. Officials say no firearm was reported, nor was one found at the scene. Additionally, no tasers were used, and no one was injured during the incident.
As a result, a 16-year-old male from Willmar is facing potential charges for possession of a dangerous weapon on school property, fleeing on foot, disorderly conduct, concealing identity, and obstructing legal process.
A 17-year-old male from Willmar was cited for disorderly conduct.
