Vernetta Lou Edberg, age 88, of Shakopee, formerly of Belle Plaine, passed away peacefully at her residence, Emerald Crest Memory Care, in Shakopee on Saturday, September 28, 2024. Vernie was born on May 17, 1936, in Manitowoc, Wisconsin to Oscar and Melitta (Meyer) Leonhardt. She spent her formative years in Shakopee until the age of 17. On September 18, 1953, she married Ken Edberg at the Bainbridge Naval Hospital Chapel in Bainbridge, Maryland. Together, they had four children, Don, Bill, Deb and Joe. Vernie worked primarily as a Home Maker and did the bookkeeping for the family business, Edberg Dairy. She found profound fulfillment in being a devote wife, mother, and grandmother. Vernie dedicated her life to nurturing and caring for those around her. Known for her compassionate nature and vibrant social presence, she we the heart of her family and a great friend to the community in which she lived. She lived her life to its fullest, raising a family, attending sporting events, spending time at the lake cabin, enjoying time with friends, being active in her church and spoiling the grandchildren. Vernie was all about family. It was not unusual for her to host the grandparents several times a week for dinner and a card game at her home in Belle Plaine. Holidays were always a big event, as all the children, grandchildren and grandparents descended on her home for an epic event. She treated her children’s friends as an extension of her family, welcoming them into her home as if they were her own. Many of them consider her their second Mom. She was very active in the First Presbyterian Church of Belle Plaine, where she joyfully participated in the Annual Bazaar, taught Youth Group, and enjoyed the weekly fellowship and spiritual guidance provided by each week’s service. Some of Vernie’s hobbies included League Bowling with the ladies, boating on the river with friends, fishing with her family and grandchildren, and supporting her favorite teams, the Minnesota Vikings and Twins. She also loved spending time with her husband, Ken, playing the slots at Mystic Lake Casino.

Vernie will be sadly missed by her children, Don Edberg of Belle Plaine, Deb (Jon) Malin of Lakeville and Joe (Valerie) Edberg of Shakopee; grandchildren, Philip Edberg (Special Friend, Jen), Jessica Edberg (Special Friend, Josh), Alice Grisim (Jesse), Shelly Murray-Phillips, Kyle Malin (Alicia), Devyn Malin, Maverick Edberg (Sarah), Jack Edberg (Sydney), and Hannah Edberg; sister-in-law, Bunny Hessian; Special friend; Cheryl Christopherson (Bill), as well as her 11 Great Grandchildren and 4 Great-Great Grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
