New Scam Alert

A new scam has recently emerged.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office is calling it the “Fake Funeral Livestream scam.”

Cybercriminals gather information about recently deceased individuals from social media and then create a realistic-looking link claiming that the funeral service is being live-streamed. The Sheriff’s office says clicking on the link leads to a website controlled by the scammers, which prompts you to enter personal information.

To avoid falling victim to this type of scam, consider the following tips:

– Never donate money to an online fund unless you can verify its legitimacy.

– If you experience a tragic loss, set your social media settings to private before sharing personal information.

– Exercise caution when asked to enter financial details online.
