Lake Crystal Man Sentenced in Fatal New Ulm Crash

A Lake Crystal man has been sentenced to four years in prison for the fatal crash in August of last year on south Broadway in New Ulm that claimed the life of 82-year-old Sharon Portner of New Ulm.

John Roy DeLeo was sentenced Monday in Brown County District Court.

He was immediately returned to custody and ordered to pay over $4200 in restitution.  All fees were waived.

He was originally charged with one count of felony criminal vehicular homicide and fourth-degree DWI.

He pled guilty to two counts of criminal vehicular homicide, gross misdemeanor third-degree DWI aggravating factor and misdemeanor fourth-degree DWI .

A toxicology report showed DeLeo’s blood alcohol content was point-19 at the time of the crash August 17, 2023.
