Marion was born on Nov. 14, 1922, in a house on Main Street in Le Sueur to Leonard and Elizabeth (Weber) Wieland. She grew up in Le Sueur and attended St. Anne’s Grade School and Le Sueur High School where she participated in band, rifle club and the Le Hi Ho. Marion attended St. Mary’s at Notre Dame in Indiana and St. Catherine’s University in St. Paul, MN. At age 73, Marion graduated from Mankato State University with a degree in Art.
Marion’s most passionate desire as a young woman was to join the military. Once she realized that women could join the WAVES, she begged her reluctant mother to leave home and seek adventure. Joining the WAVES at the earliest date possible, her 20th birthday, Marion was sent to Hunter College in New York City and later to the University of Notre Dame in Indiana for training. At Marion’s final assignment in Corpus Christi she met her future husband, Bill. After six dates and Bill’s Navy tours of duty, they married and started a family in San Diego. Marion continued her devotion as a WWII Vet by assisting at various military activities, and made an Honor Flight to Washington D.C.
Marion traveled widely both participating in volunteer projects and enjoying exploring different cultures, many times with her two pilot sons, Mike and Jeff. She always had a carry-on packed along with her passport, ready to leave at any opportunity, and eventually visited 73 countries. Marion truly loved adventure, but Le Sueur was always Home, and held a special place deep in her heart. She loved the community of Le Sueur and its citizens. Marion was a woman of strong faith and deep family love. Her favorite activities in the last years were playing bridge, socializing, and attending exercise classes. Marion was celebrated at the Le Sueur Community Center for her achievement of being one of 10 finalists nationally for the Silver Sneaker Award.
Marion is survived by her children: Barbara (Merlyn) Olson of Savage, MN; Pamela (Ken) Meyer of Bloomington, MN; Michael (Gina) Peck of Edina, MN; Jeffrey (Laura) of Edina; William Peck of Le Sueur, MN.; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Marion is preceded in death by her parents; husband William in 1988; and brother James Wieland.
