SHERIFF’S OFFICE WARNING OF PHONE SCAM INVOLVING SHERIFF’S OFFICE PERSONNEL
The Brown County Sheriff’s Office is warning you of a scam in which callers are impersonating Brown County Sheriff’s Office personnel. Authorities say some of the encounters claim to be very generic in nature but some are more detailed. In this case, the caller identifies themselves as the Brown County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Jeremy Reed and tells the person they have missed a court date and there is now a warrant for their arrest. The caller also provides a real badge number, the real office desk phone number and the main number to the Brown County dispatch center. The caller will attempt to get personal identification information. The sheriff’s office reminds you that law enforcement will not ask for your personal identification information, Social Security numbers, banking information or payments through PayPal or gift cards. Do not call back the number the scammer provided. If you have questions, you are asked to call the sheriff’s department.
