CHARGES FILED IN OLIVIA STANDOFF

The Renville County Attorney’s Office has filed criminal charges against Alejandro Vela II of Olivia in connection with an incident Wednesday on Maple Avenue in Olivia.  Court documents say Vela is charged with assault in the second degree, threats of violence and assault in the fourth degree – all felonies,  also a misdemeanor assault in the fifth degree.  The complaint says Olivia police responded to an assault at Vela’s residence on Maple Avenue.  The victim told authorities he was punched multiple times and chased down the street by Vela who was allegedly armed with a large kitchen knife.  Vela also allegedly told the victim that if he had a gun he would shoot him.  Vela refused to exit the home and the Brown Lyon Redwood Renville Emergency Response Unit was deployed.  Officers made forcible entry and arrested Vela who resisted arrest and kicked an officer causing a contusion to the officer’s finger requiring medical evaluation.  An arraignment hearing was held Friday and the court set Vega’s bail at $200,000 unconditional and $100,000 conditional.  Vela’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 23 for a Settlement Conference at the Renville County Courthouse.
