GOVERNOR WALZ’S GUN CONTROL SPECIAL SESSION PLANS FACE RESISTANCE

Governor Walz’s push for stricter gun laws is losing momentum in the Minnesota Legislature.  Despite renewed urgency after the Annunciation School shooting and the assassination of State Representative Melissa Hortman.  Republican lawmakers remain opposed to banning assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines.  Walz proposed a special legislative session to advance his proposals, but passage would require bipartisan support which looks unlikely.  Some Democrats now say Walz shouldn’t call a special session unless a deal is within reach.  A majority of Minnesota voters support calling a special session of the state Legislature to address gun violence.  A KSTP/SurveyUSApoll says 58% of respondents are in favor of lawmakers reconvening in St. Paul while 28% oppose the idea.  86% of Democrats back the special session compared to 43% of Republicans.
