NEW ULM SCHOOL DISTRICT LOOKING AT CUTS

The New Ulm School Board is looking at a budget deficit which could lead to cuts.  The school board took a look at options during a work session to address a $900,000 deficit for 2026-27 and a possible $2-million deficit in 2027 – 28.  School officials say enrollment is declining, having dropped by 47 from last year and projections continuing to show the enrollment shrinking.  The board was presented with two options – reducing the budget by $1.09-million which would eliminate eight staff positions and reducing the budget by $1.65-million which would cut 16 staff positions.  Plus cuts to the curriculum and activities will be explored.  Potential cooperation with other districts is possible as are increased fees on admissions and season passes.  The board did not make an official decision on cuts during the work session.
