First Ocean-Going Vessel of Season Arrives in Duluth-Superior

(Learfield News/Duluth, MN) — The first ocean-going vessel of the season arrived in the Twin Ports this morning (Wednesday).

Jayson Hron of the Duluth Seaway Port Authority says Ocean Ranger 7 sailed from Taiwan and she passed through the Pacific Ocean, the Panama Canal, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway System.

The cargo ship passed under the Aerial Lift Bridge at 7:32 this morning.

Hron says the navigation season is off to a challenging start due to ice issues on Lake Superior.

Last year’s first saltie arrived in Duluth on April 21st.

The winner of the 43rd annual First Ship Contest is Sheri Dauplaise of Cloquet.  She guessed the first saltie would arrive at 7:15 a.m. today.
