Buxton & Abel power Twins to 6-0 win over Red Sox
Byron Buxton powered the Minnesota Twins to a dominant 6-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night, delivering two home runs as part of a four-hit performance. He also crossed the plate four times, continuing a strong stretch for the Twins, who have now won eight of their last nine games. Brooks Lee added a home run of his own to support the offense.
On the mound, Mick Abel turned in an impressive outing. The right-hander went seven innings, allowing just four hits without issuing a walk while striking out a career-high 10 batters. Acquired from the Philadelphia Phillies at last year’s trade deadline in exchange for closer Jhoan Duran, Abel earned his first win of the season as Boston was shut out for the first time this year.
The Twins got on the board early when Luke Keaschall singled in Buxton in the first inning. Buxton narrowly beat the throw at the plate on a play that was initially ruled an out but overturned after a successful challenge by manager Derek Shelton.
Buxton stayed hot at the plate, launching the first pitch of the third inning deep into the second deck in left field. He struck again in the sixth with another solo shot, marking the 18th multi-home run game of his career.
Minnesota kept the pressure on in the fourth inning. Brooks Lee opened the frame with a home run to right field, and later Trevor Larnach delivered a two-run single to stretch the lead to 5-0.
Boston starter Sonny Gray struggled, giving up five runs on nine hits over four innings while walking one and striking out one.
The Red Sox also dealt with an injury, as first baseman Willson Contreras exited the game in the fifth inning due to lower back tightness.
