Memorial Day

Communities across the nation will be marking Memorial Day on May 27 with programs and services commemorating those who died while serving their country in the United States armed forces.

In Hutchinson at 9:30 Monday morning, a parade will go from Faith Lutheran Church to McLeod County Veterans Memorial Park. Then, at 10:00am, a ceremony will be held at the park, with the official unveiling of the new Gold Star Families Memorial (see photo).

Memorial Day (originally known as Decoration Day) is a federal holiday in the United States for honoring and mourning the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

From 1868 to 1970, it was observed on May 30. Since 1971, it is observed on the last Monday of May.

The first national observance of Memorial Day occurred on May 30, 1868.
