Byron Buxton hits 3-run homer, helps power the Twins to a 13-6 win over Diamondbacks
PHOENIX, AZ – Byron Buxton showcased his power with a three-run homer and collected a total of three hits as the Minnesota Twins surged past the Arizona Diamondbacks 13-6 on Thursday. The victory came despite an injury scare for Twins shortstop Carlos Correa, who left the game in the seventh inning after being hit on the right wrist by a pitch. Fortunately, X-rays revealed no fractures, and Correa is listed as day-to-day, confident he’ll be ready to play on Friday despite experiencing numbness in his hand immediately after the incident.
Correa reached base five times throughout the game, contributing with a single, two walks, catcher’s interference, and the hit by pitch. Buxton, in addition to his seventh home run of the season, crossed the plate three times as the Twins amassed all 13 of their runs between the second and fifth innings. Minnesota secured the series by taking two out of three games and has now triumphed in four of their last five outings.
Arizona found themselves in an early 11-0 deficit before managing to score four runs off David Festa, who made his major-league debut for the Twins. Ketel Marte hit his 17th homer of the season, tying him with Christian Walker for the team lead in home runs.
Festa, buoyed by ample run support, earned the win despite allowing five runs over five innings, yielding seven hits while walking one and striking out two. His performance was bolstered by robust backing from the Twins’ offense and support from the enthusiastic crowd in the stands.
The Diamondbacks’ starter, Montgomery, who had won his previous three starts, struggled against the relentless Minnesota lineup. The Twins’ predominantly right-handed batting order capitalized early, piling up six runs in a challenging second inning that saw Ryan Jeffers and Byron Buxton kickstart the scoring with singles. A sequence of hits and defensive miscues by Arizona added to Minnesota’s commanding lead.
Following the game, the Twins announced that RHP Bailey Ober (7-4, 4.50 ERA) would take the mound in the upcoming series opener against the Seattle Mariners, who are scheduled to start RHP Logan Gilbert (5-4, 2.71 ERA). Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks are set to open a series against the Oakland Athletics with RHP Slade Cecconi (2-6, 5.74 ERA) facing off against Oakland’s JP Sears (4-7, 5.04 ERA) at Chase Field.
