White Sox finally beat AL-Central rival Twins, but end up splitting doubleheader
CHICAGO, IL – Brooks Lee and Carlos Correa each launched consecutive home runs, while Ryan Jeffers drove in the decisive run in the seventh inning, leading the Minnesota Twins to a 3-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox in the nightcap of Wednesday’s doubleheader. The win allowed the Twins to split the doubleheader after the White Sox took the first game 3-1.
Jeffers broke a 2-2 tie with his RBI single that scored Byron Buxton in the seventh inning. The Twins have been dominant against their AL Central rivals this season, winning nine of their ten matchups.
In the sixth inning, Lee connected for a home run off his former college teammate Drew Thorpe, moments before All-Star Correa extended his hitting streak to twelve games with a home run into the right-field seats. This power surge extended the Twins’ club-record streak to homering in 28 consecutive games, the longest streak in the majors this season.
Steven Okert (3-0) earned the win after pitching a scoreless inning in relief, with Jhoan Duran notching his 14th save of the season by closing out the ninth inning.
Earlier in the day, Martín Maldonado homered for the White Sox in their 3-1 victory in the opener, snapping a three-game losing streak. Michael Kopech pitched a rare immaculate inning for Chicago, striking out the side on nine pitches in the ninth inning, a feat not seen in the majors this season and a first for the White Sox since 1923.
Looking ahead, the Twins will send RHP Joe Ryan (6-5, 3.29 ERA) to the mound in Friday night’s series opener against the San Francisco Giants. The White Sox will start LHP Garrett Crochet (6-6, 3.08 ERA) in their upcoming weekend series against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
