Twins sweep White Sox, Mauer statue to be erected

(Minneapolis, MN) — The Minnesota Twins completed a three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox with a 13-7 win at Target Field. The Twins scored six runs in the second inning to take an 8-0 lead and kept Chicago at an arm’s length the rest of the way. Royce Lewis hit a home run and drove in three, while Willi Castro finished with three hits and three R-B-I. Cole Sands earned his fifth win of the season out of the bullpen. Minnesota is on a four-game winning streak and sitting at 62-48 on the year. They trail first-place Cleveland by four-and-a-half-games in the A-L Central Division. Andrew Benintendi homered in the losing effort, and Chris Flexen fell to 2-11 after surrendering six earned runs and two unearned runs in one-and-two-thirds innings. The White Sox are the first team to lose 20 consecutive games since 1988. The Twins open a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs tonight at Wrigley Field.

(Minneapolis, MN) — The Minnesota Twins announced on Saturday night that they would erect a statue of newly-inducted Baseball Hall of Famer Joe Mauer outside of Target Field next year. A bronze statue of Mauer will be placed outside of the ballpark at a place and date to be determined sometime in the future. The Mauer statue will join similar statues of Twins legends Rod Carew, Harmon Killebrew, Kirby Puckett, Tony Oliva, Kent Hrbek, Tom Kelly, and Carl and Eloise Pohlad which are scattered at various locations surrounding Target Field.
