2-hour stalemate with armed, barricaded suspect in Faribault ended without use of force
FARIBAULT, MN – On Monday morning, Faribault experienced a tense but peaceful standoff lasting two hours between an armed suspect and local police on the city’s south side. The incident began when officers responded to a domestic violence report at approximately 9:51 a.m. involving a 27-year-old man who was alleged to have outstanding felony warrants and had threatened to shoot a woman.
When police arrived, the suspect had barricaded himself inside the home of the person who reported the incident, according to Faribault Police Captain Jason Severson. By 11:51 a.m., the suspect was taken into custody without any injuries or shots fired. “There was no force used other than handcuffing him, and he was cooperative throughout the process,” Severson said.
The situation drew a significant response from various law enforcement agencies, including South Metro SWAT, Faribault and Farmington police departments, as well as the sheriff’s offices of Rice and Dakota counties. This mobilization attracted a crowd of onlookers outside the Deerwood Lane Townhomes.
“The woman had escaped the situation with her children, while the suspect remained inside,” Severson explained. “A small SWAT team was deployed to help establish a perimeter and ensure the suspect did not attempt to escape through a window or other means.”
Severson noted that the suspect might face charges such as domestic assault and terroristic threats, among others, though the investigation is still ongoing.
