Campaign Seeks Changes to MSHSL Girls’ Sports Rules

A new statewide campaign is urging the Minnesota State High School League to change its eligibility rules for girls’ sports.

The Make It Fair Minnesota campaign wants students participating in sex-separated sports to compete according to their sex assigned at birth. Organizers are asking voting representatives from the league’s member schools to support a bylaw amendment.

The campaign says the league can make the change without action from the governor or Legislature. However, the MSHSL has maintained that its current policy is controlled by Minnesota law, which protects students from discrimination based on gender identity. The Minnesota Attorney General’s Office issued a legal opinion supporting that position in 2025.
