She was born on May 30, 1934, to Myrtle and Melvin Hakenson in the family home west of Norcross, Minnesota. Her brother, Milton was born two years later. When she was 8 years old Delaine, Milton, Myrtle, and Grandpa Martin Larson moved to a farm outside of Wheaton, MN. Delaine would recall that she and Milton would ride their horse “Lindy” to the country school. Her mother was very special to Delaine, teaching her to bake, sew, embroider and crochet rugs at a young age, and was always loving and caring. This special bond continued throughout their lives.

She married Frank Borsheim in 1951. Their family grew quickly in the next five years as Deborah, Brad, Linda, Kim, and Julie were born. Delaine was a loving mother and great homemaker, and she enjoyed having a clean and neat house even while raising five kids. Though they didn’t have running water, she made sure the kids were bathed and had clean clothes for church and Sunday School. The country gatherings with other families were the social events loved by all. Throughout her life she enjoyed playing cards with friends and family, with her favorite being whist. She worked several jobs in Wheaton, first as a teller at the State Bank of Wheaton, then at Wheaton Co-op and finally retired after working 25 years with the Treasurer’s Office at the Traverse County Courthouse.

Her friendships were many and true as she shared her great sense of humor and caring personality with all. Delaine loved music and was a wonderful piano player, mostly by ear. It was hard not to clap or tap your foot when she started playing her signature song – “In the Mood.” She shared her talents with many – teaching piano lessons to children and joining the sing-along group that would make regular visits to the Wheaton nursing home. Her piano playing put smiles on many faces. She was an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, singing in the choir, participating in circle groups and on various committees. She loved the annual church bizarre when she could put on her red apron and help with rolling out lefse -perfectly thin and round. Some of her granddaughters were fortunate to have her teach them her lefse making secrets.

She later married Bob Palmquist and they enjoyed trips to various locations around the U.S. After Bob passed, she married Willy Ketterling and again enjoyed traveling, weekends at the cabin and their winter retreat in Arizona.

Delaine’s life was strengthened by her faith and friendships and most importantly, her love for her family. She was happiest when she could spend time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. In 2023, she moved to Farmstead Living in Moorhead, MN and enjoyed many holidays and visits with Brad’s family. Delaine’s circle of friends grew with staff and residents at Farmstead.

She is survived by her children: Brad (Mary) Borsheim of Moorhead, MN, Kim (Ann) Borsheim of Sheridan, Wyoming, and Julie (Dan) Basko of Conroe, Texas; ten grandchildren: Quarry Rousset, Chance Harrell, Chad (Alli) Borsheim, Erica (Ryan) Klev, Andria (Brady) Elhard, Maren Borsheim, Kelsey (Stacy) Schreibeis, Mason (Anna) Borsheim, Eli Hauschild, and Manessha (Vance) Hale; and ten great grandchildren: Autumn Borsheim, Gage and Gemma Klev, Corbin and Makenzie Elhard, Wyatt and Waylynn Schreibeis and Zoey Hale, and Leo, Lincoln and Piper Hauschild.

Delaine is preceded in death by her mother: Myrtle Rinke; brother: Milton Hakenson; daughters: Deborah Rousset and Linda Borsheim.

Memorial donations can be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 605 10th St. N., Wheaton, MN 56296.

Arrangements are with the Bainbridge Funeral Home in Wheaton, MN.
