Detroit Lakes Residents Challenge Classroom Display Ban

Nearly 100 people attended Monday’s Detroit Lakes School Board meeting as debate continued over the removal of rainbow stickers and other unauthorized displays from classrooms.

The board voted 4-to-2 in July to direct staff to remove materials that are not funded, sponsored or authorized by the district. The motion specifically included rainbow stickers, posters, flags and buttons.

Supporters of the displays say they help L-G-B-T-Q students feel welcome and supported. Those backing the removal argue political or ideological messages do not belong in classrooms.

The directive remains in place as Detroit Lakes students prepare to return to school September 1st.
