DNR Asks Hunters to Avoid Collared Research Bears

The Minnesota D-N-R is asking hunters to avoid shooting black bears wearing research collars or large, colorful ear tags.

The agency is monitoring about 50 collared bears across Minnesota. Researchers use the animals to study habitat use, physical condition, reproduction and interactions with people.

Bear researcher Andrew Tri says the information is most valuable when individual bears are monitored over multiple years.

The D-N-R says thick fall fur can hide a bear’s collar, but the large ear tags should be easier to see. Taking a collared bear remains legal, but hunters are encouraged to pause and look carefully before shooting.

Hunters must register harvested bears within 48 hours. Registration is available online, through the D-N-R licensing app or at participating registration stations. Phone registration is no longer available.
