Forest Service Considers Partial Boundary Waters Reopening

Portions of the Boundary Waters could reopen for overnight camping next week if wildfire conditions continue to improve.

The U.S. Forest Service is considering reopening 37 of the wilderness area’s 103 quota entry points beginning Thursday, July 30. The proposal would restore access to about 424,000 acres, or 39 percent of the Boundary Waters.

Officials plan to announce a final decision Monday after reviewing wildfire activity, weather conditions and available firefighting resources.

Lightning-sparked wildfires have burned nearly 64,000 acres in the United States and more than 8,000 acres in Canada. Crews continue making progress, but officials caution conditions could change quickly.
