At the age of 16, she began working at the Woolworth Company in downtown Minneapolis. After high school, Gerrie moved to Ogden, Utah, where she worked for CorningWare. She later lived in San Jose, California, before returning to Minnesota in 1961.

In 1963, Gerrie married Lawrence “Larry” George Haferman of Lydia, Minnesota, at a Lutheran church in Columbia Heights. The following year, they moved to a 13-acre home in Prior Lake, where they enjoyed life on their hobby farm with goats, horses, rabbits, cats, and dogs. Together, Larry and Gerrie raised and showed Champion Cardigan Welsh Corgis, an endeavor that brought them great pride and happiness.

Gerrie was the co-founder and CEO of Haferman Water Conditioning in Burnsville, Minnesota. In the days before computers, she managed all the company’s accounting by hand. Ever dedicated to learning, Gerrie earned her accounting degree from Dakota County Technical College while balancing work and family.

Gerrie served as a member of the board at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and was instrumental in establishing St. Paul’s Lutheran School in the early 1980s. She also found great pleasure in reading historical fiction and tending to her many plants and flowers.

In the years following her life-changing stroke in 2017, Gerrie was an example of patient endurance to all those who knew her. She faced her challenges with grace and steadfast faith, inspiring her family and friends.
