Gopher Soccer upsets Iowa

(St. Paul, MN) — The University of Minnesota women’s soccer team wrapped up the regular season with a 2-1 upset win over the 11th-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes in St. Paul yesterday. The visiting Hawkeyes scored first in the game, just 40-seconds in, but were shut out from that point on by Minnesota goalkeeper Sarah Martin of Champlin. Gopher sophomore Paig Kalal of Brooklyn Park scored the game-tying goal before Sophia Boman of Edina scored the game-winner on a penalty kick in the 64th minute. The Gophers finished the season undefeated at home and have an overall record of 12-3-and-3, while going 6-3-and-2 in the Big Ten. Iowa dipped to 13-2-and-3 overall and 8-2-and-1 in the league. Minnesota will now host the opening and quarterfinal rounds of the Big Ten Tournament, starting on Thursday at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium on the St. Paul campus.
