Gophers, Mavericks both eliminated in NCAA Mens Hockey
(Fargo, ND) — The Minnesota State-Mankato men’s hockey team saw its season come to a close with a heartbreaking 2-1 double-overtime loss to Western Michigan last night in Fargo. Broncos sophomore forward Grant Slukynsky of Warroad tallied the game-winner in the second O-T. The two teams played to a scoreless first period with W-M-U scoring in the second. Mavericks senior forward Kaden Bohlsen of Willmar tied the game in the third period at 1-1 before the regulation ended. After a scoreless first O-T, the Broncos got a goal with 12:46 remaining in the second extra session. M-S-U goaltender Alex Tracy made 42 saves in the loss. Broncos goalie Hampton Slukynsky of Warroad made 29 saves in the win. Western Michigan improved to 31-7-and3, while Minnesota State ended the year at 27-9-and-3.
(Fargo, ND) — The University of Minnesota men’s hockey team had its season come to an end last night after not being able to hold a 3-1 third period lead against U-Mass in the N-C-A-A Regional in Fargo. The Minutemen scored three straight third period goals to take a 4-3 lead before Minnesota star Jimmy Snuggerud scored his second of the night to send the game to overtime. In overtime, Gopher defenseman Ryan Chesley was tripped coming up ice and lost possession of the puck, but no call was made. U-Mass took the turnover and scored the game-winner to win it 6-5. Junior forwards Brody Lamb of Byron and Connor Kurth of Lindstrom scored the other two goals for Minnesota, which ended its season with a 25-11-and-4 mark. U-Mass improved to 21-13-and-5 and will play Western Michigan tomorrow for the right to go the Frozen Four.
