Heavy Rain Raises Flash-Flooding Threat Across Minnesota

Heavy overnight rain is raising the threat of flash flooding across west-central and southern Minnesota.

The National Weather Service says slow-moving thunderstorms could produce widespread rainfall totals of two to four inches, with isolated amounts topping six inches.

A flood watch remains in effect until noon for Willmar, Montevideo, New Ulm and surrounding areas. Counties included are Kandiyohi, Chippewa, Swift, Lac qui Parle, Yellow Medicine, Renville, McLeod, Meeker, Sibley, Redwood, Brown, Nicollet and Le Sueur.

Farther south, a flood watch continues through this afternoon for Blue Earth, Faribault, Freeborn, Martin, Steele, Waseca and Watonwan counties. That includes Mankato, Albert Lea, Fairmont, Owatonna, Waseca and Saint James.

Street flooding and rapidly rising creeks are possible. Drivers should never attempt to cross a flooded road. Because weather alerts can change quickly, check the latest National Weather Service updates before traveling.
