Hutchinson Fraud Investigation/Jury Duty Scam

A Hutchinson woman was the target of a one of the latest scams going around.

Last week, the woman reported to Hutchinson Police that she received a phone call from someone claiming to be from McLeod County and told her that she had a warrant out for her arrest for missing jury duty.

The caller stated they needed $7,500 from the woman through Apple Pay to prevent her from getting arrested. The woman sent the caller $275 via Apple Pay before she separately called the McLeod County Sheriff’s Office official number and confirmed she was being scammed.

The victim is working with her bank to try and recover her funds.

Authorities say no legitimate agency would ask you to pay them via a cellular mobile app (like Apple Pay), cryptocurrency, or gift cards. Hang up and call the claimed source directly (like the Hutchinson Police Department) via a confirmed and valid local telephone number.
