Keaschall powers Twins to 7-3 win over Tigers
Luke Keaschall delivered the key blow with a two-run homer in the fourth inning, and Minnesota’s bullpen took care of the rest as the Twins defeated the Detroit Tigers 7–3 on a bitterly cold Monday night.
Keaschall’s first home run of the season helped starter Joe Ryan secure his first win of the year. After Ryan exited, four relievers—Anthony Banda, Eric Orze, Kody Funderburk, and Cody Laweryson—combined for four scoreless innings. Laweryson closed things out, pitching the final 1⅔ innings to earn his first save.
It was a chilly evening from the start, with temperatures at 37 degrees at first pitch and dropping throughout the game. Players bundled up in full sleeves and head coverings to battle the cold.
Ryan began strong, retiring the Tigers in order through the first three innings. He ran into trouble in the fourth, allowing three runs, but still turned in a solid outing. Coming off a rough, rain-soaked start in Kansas City, he went five innings, giving up two earned runs on three hits and three walks while striking out seven.
The Twins got on the board in the third inning with RBI singles from Matt Wallner and Royce Lewis. Detroit answered in the fourth, tying the game behind an RBI double from Colt Keith and a two-run single by Zach McKinstry.
Minnesota responded quickly. Trevor Larnach singled with one out in the fourth, setting the stage for Keaschall’s go-ahead homer, which landed just over the left-field wall.
Detroit starter Casey Mize took the loss, surrendering five runs on seven hits and three walks over 4⅓ innings.
Funderburk ran into control issues in the eighth, walking three batters, but the Tigers failed to capitalize. Spencer Torkelson was thrown out trying to advance after a pitch got past catcher Victor Caratini and ricocheted off the backstop right back to him.
Caratini later added insurance for Minnesota with a two-run single in the eighth inning.
