Mangione Plans Psychiatric Defense in Murder Case

(Learfield News/New York, NY) — Attorneys for Luigi Mangione say they plan to use a psychiatric defense in his New York state murder trial.

Court filings indicate the defense will argue Mangione was experiencing an extreme emotional disturbance at the time of the alleged killing of Minnesota-based United Health Care CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024.

If a jury accepts that argument, it could reduce a murder conviction to a lesser charge.

Mangione has pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to go on trial in September.

He also faces separate federal charges connected to the case.
