MANY SCAMS CIRCULATING
There are a number of scams circulating around the area with many involving law enforcement agencies. The New Ulm Police Department Facebook page is warning you to beware if you are contacted about a warrant for your arrest, taxes etc. you are told the only solution is to pay via “Coinflip.” Authorities say stop there and don’t do anything further as transactions using Coinflip are non-refundable and irreversible. Police say victims of these scams have been losing thousands of dollars. Other scams include the McLeod County Sheriff’s Office and Hutchinson police receiving numerous calls from individuals reporting they have received phone calls from someone claiming to be a “Sargeant Johnson” with the Sheriff’s Office. Authorities say there is no Sargeant Johnson with the sheriff’s office or any McLeod County agency. The person uses scare tactics to tell people you are in trouble for not appearing for jury duty. Authorities say if you receive this type of call, just hang up. The same type of scam is circulating through Kandiyohi County too. Law enforcement say scammers are becoming more creative. You are encouraged to contact law enforcement if you have questions on whether something is a scam or not.
