Mayer Lutheran Baseball coach announces his retirement

Longtime baseball coach at Mayer Lutheran High School in Mayer, MN, David Lane, has announced his retirement as head coach of the team.

Lane began his coaching career at East Monona Community School in Morehead, IA where he served as Athletic Director, math teacher, and coached basketball, track, and football until being called to Mayer Lutheran in 1981. Lane’s forty-three-year tenure as head baseball coach at
Mayer Lutheran yielded a record of 464-417 (2 ties!) for a winning percentage of 53%. Lane is a 2018 inductee into the Minnesota High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.  In addition to coaching baseball at Mayer Lutheran, Lane also taught math and theology, retiring from full-time teaching in 2022. He led the school’s annual mission trip to Juarez, Mexico for sixteen years, constructing housing for the residents there. Lane and his wife, Deb, have been married for forty-two years. They are blessed with four children and ten grandchildren.  “Coaching baseball at Mayer Lutheran has been one of the joys of my life,” Lane exclaimed.  “I have loved working with so many awesome kids and their parents.” “Dave Lane is the epitome of a Christian coach and we have been blessed to have him on our team at Mayer Lutheran. Whether as a teacher, mission trip leader, or friend, Dave is a positive influence and makes everyone’s lives a bit more full and happy. We are grateful for the past forty- three years of his leadership in our baseball program,” shared Mayer Lutheran’s Executive Director, Joel Landskroener.

Mayer Lutheran’s Activities Director Kris Gustin noted, “We are grateful for the many years of service to God’s kingdom, Mayer Lutheran families, and me personally.  Dave has been a joy to work with and work for.  I appreciate all he has done for myself and the ministry of Mayer Lutheran.  Dave Lane is always welcome at the ballpark!”

A search team is in place to hire his successor as head coach of the highly-successful program.

The campus of Mayer Lutheran, a regional school that has served families from the west metro area of the Twin Cities for sixty-three years, is located in historic Mayer at 306 7th Street NE– two miles south of Hwy 7 on MN Hwy 25, less than forty minutes from downtown Minneapolis. The school serves grades six through twelve.
