Minnesota Primary Sets Turnout Record

Minnesota voters set a new state primary record this week, casting more than one-point-one million ballots.

Unofficial results show about one-quarter of eligible voters participated in Tuesday’s election. It marks the first Minnesota primary with more than one million ballots cast. The previous record was about 925-thousand votes in 2018.

D-F-L State Senator Aric Putnam of St. Cloud says the surge could reflect voter frustration across the political spectrum. Putnam says dissatisfaction can motivate people to vote regardless of party—but the primary results do not guarantee similarly high turnout this fall.

Minnesota’s general election is Tuesday, November third.
