More Boundary Waters Campsites Reopening Thursday

More of the Boundary Waters is reopening as firefighters make progress against wildfires in northeastern Minnesota.

The Superior National Forest says that beginning Thursday, August 13th, more than 15-hundred of the wilderness area’s roughly two-thousand campsites will be open. That represents about 73 percent of Boundary Waters campsites.

The July Lightning fires have burned 73-thousand-742 acres in the United States and Canada. The Camp Fire is 84 percent contained, while the Bear Trap Fire is 41 percent contained. More than 760 personnel remain assigned to the incident.

Some areas remain closed because of active fires and recovery work. Campfires are still prohibited throughout the Boundary Waters, and visitors should check current conditions before traveling.
