Polk County Horse Is Minnesota’s First Equine West Nile Case of 2026

Minnesota has confirmed its first equine case of West Nile virus this year.

The case involves an unvaccinated three-year-old standardbred gelding in Polk County. The horse developed moderate weakness and coordination problems but began improving after receiving veterinary treatment.

West Nile virus is carried by mosquitoes. Infected horses cannot spread the virus to people or other horses.

State animal health officials encourage owners to keep horses properly vaccinated and reduce mosquito habitat by draining standing water, mowing tall grass and changing water in drinking troughs weekly.

The details were confirmed through the Minnesota Board of Animal Health.
