Rabies Confirmed in Brown County Cow

Nine people have been advised to receive rabies treatment after a Brown County cow tested positive for the virus.

The Minnesota Board of Animal Health says the Hereford heifer began behaving abnormally September 1st and was euthanized as its condition worsened. Testing confirmed rabies September 8th.

Officials say the owner, relatives and veterinary workers may have encountered the animal’s saliva while providing treatment without protective equipment.

Thirteen cattle have been quarantined, and more than 40 additional animals are being monitored. Animal-health officials recommend wearing gloves and eye protection when treating livestock with unexplained neurological symptoms.
