Richard Hayes Cady was born on February 26, 1935, to Anthony and Gertrude (Schneider) Cady on the family farm in North Star Township, near Springfield, Minnesota. Dick was baptized and confirmed his faith at St. Raphael Catholic Church in Springfield. He received his education at St. Raphael Catholic School and then Springfield High School. Following high school, Richard served in the United States Army. Once he returned, Dick attended St. John’s University and received his teaching degree. On June 15, 1961, he was united in marriage to Patricia Kroening in Springfield. They made their home in Albany where Dick began his teaching career and he and Pat raised their five children: Julie, Michelle, Toni, Kathy, and Sean. Over the years, Dick attended Augustana, St. Cloud State, and St. Thomas Universities to attain his Master’s Degree. He taught for over 35 years in the Albany School District. In addition to teaching, he was instrumental in the start-up of the grade school basketball program, was the girls’ basketball and softball coach, scouted for football, did timing for basketball games and was in charge of the Drama Program at Albany High School. Dick was a life-long teacher and learner; always researching how things should be done, he wanted everything he did to be done right.
During the summers, Dick was known to many as the “House Doc,” as he was the go-to house painter, making sure that his work was meticulously done. He often said that the ‘windows were the soul of the house’ and those needed to be done perfectly. Throughout the years, Dick, in some capacity, painted over half of the houses in Albany. In his free time, he enjoyed woodworking, refinishing and making things new – including the wooden chairs at DeToy’s, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. In 1994, Richard and Pat moved to a farm site near Donnelly; where Dick continued painting and refinishing. Pat preceded Dick in death on December 23, 2008. Richard continued to live on the farm. Always having to have something to do, Dick had to have a schedule for his day, this always included stops at DeToy’s in Morris for caramel rolls, coffee and conversations with Bob. Dick had a strong faith and was a very active member of Assumption Catholic Church in Morris.
Dick is survived by his daughters: Julie (Joe) Kill of Donnelly, MN, Michelle (Jeff) Nathe of Albany, MN, and Toni (Karl Schweiss) Cady of Aberdeen, South Dakota; eight grandchildren: David Grose of Aberdeen, SD, Adam (Kayla) Cady of Aberdeen, SD, Kira (Sky) Cady of Aberdeen, SD, Collin Cady of Aberdeen, SD, Austin (Sydney) Cady of Aberdeen, SD, Zach (Kendra) Nathe of Albany, MN, Shannon Kill of Donnelly, MN, and Callista Kill of Donnelly, MN; five great-grandchildren: Kendra, Brantley, LaMae, Bella, and Declin; and special grandson-in-law: Cody Hoffenkamp of Holdingford, MN;
