State Amateur baseball Tournament:

Class C-Starbuck defeats Urbank 5 to 1 and Hanska scores five runs in the fifth inning, to come from behind and defeat Atwater 7 to 3. The Lakers will play Windom Friday night in Jordan.

Class B-Cold Spring was a 7 to 3 winner over Bluffton in 12 innings, Sobieski edges Kimball 3 to 2, Plato sneaks past Stewartville/Racine 2 to 1 and Jordan wins a slugfest over Young America 9 to 7.

Class A-Mac’s Industrial needed 13 innings to get past Elk River 2 to 1, Coon Rapids eliminates Chaska 3 to 2 and Baseball 365 was a 3 to 2 winner over Miesville.

Twins take final game of series with White Sox:

The Minnesota Twins got a pitching gem from right-hander Zebby Matthews and beat first-place Chicago 5-1 at Target Field yesterday. Mathews didn’t allow a baserunner until giving up a soft single with two outs in the sixth inning. He worked eight-and-a-third innings of five-hit, one-run ball. Matthews struck out five and walked no one, moving to 9-8 this season.  Designated hitter Josh Bell and left fielder Trevor Larnach each drove home two runs in the win. Luke Keaschall belted a solo homer in the seventh. The 65-72 Twins host Detroit tonight. First pitch is 6:40 P-M. Coverage begins at 6pm on KNUJ and SAM 107.3.

Lynx lose to the Dream:

The Minnesota Lynx lost a second consecutive game with an 89-81 setback at Atlanta last night. Minnesota trailed by 11 points at halftime and could not get over the hump. Point guard Olivia Miles led the way with 21 points for Minnesota, which dipped to 31-9 on the season. The Dream improved to 26-14, getting double-doubles from Angel Reese, Allisha Grey, and Jordin Canada.  The Lynx lead Golden State by two-and-a-half games for the top seed in the postseason. The league takes a break for the FIBA World Cup competition. Minnesota returns to action on Friday, September 18th at home against New York.
