Steve was born on August 5, 1950 in Morris, MN, to Wally & Helen (Lesmeister) Staples. Steve was 1 of 7 siblings and grew up on the family farm south of Alberta. Steve reminisced about his chores and life on the farm frequently. Steve also was an athlete and excelled in football and basketball at Alberta High School and later, Chokio-Alberta High School. At school is where he met the love of his life, Kathy. They were married on February 26, 1972. Together they called Alberta their home and raised three children-Bob, Christy and Steph.
Before entering the construction industry, Steve attended Willmar Junior College. Steve worked a variety of jobs in the concrete construction industry within Minnesota and decided to open his own concrete construction business, Staples Construction. Steve worked alongside his son Bob, brother Ron and many nephews and extended family through the years. Steve was a wizard at his work in construction and his work can be found in all parts of west central Minnesota. Steve’s work ethic was second to none. He was passionate and dedicated to his profession and helped many of his employees become the best concrete construction workers in the Stevens County area. Steve was also in the Minnesota National Guard for 7 years and served at Fort Ripley in the Little Falls area.
Eventually, Steve and Kathy decided to make their lake home their permanent residence on Clitherall Lake. Through the years, Steve enjoyed spending time at the lake place with his family and traveling with his wife Kathy. Steve was an avid sportsman and sports fan. He enjoyed fishing with his friends and family. He especially enjoyed his winter Lake of the Woods trips with his dear friends. Steve also enjoyed deer hunting and loved his weekends at the deer shack with his friends, his son Bob and grandson Trey. Steve also did everything he could to attend events for his grandchildren. He was one of their biggest fans and you could see him smiling in the back row alongside his wife Kathy, gushing with pride. Steve enjoyed watching the MN Vikings, MN Twins, and MN Gopher teams in his spare time. Steve’s smile will never be forgotten.
