Pablo Lopez earned his 11th win after giving up two earned runs and one unearned run on six hits in six innings.
Minnesota snapped a two-game losing streak, improving to 66-52 on the season, remaining three-and-a-half-games behind first-place Cleveland.
Bobby Witt Jr. homered in the losing effort, while Brady Singer was charged with his eighth loss after striking out nine and allowing six runs on eight hits in five innings. Kansas City has dropped two of three at sits at 65-54.
Game two of the three-game series starts tonight at 6:40 PM.
Rookie pitcher Zebby Matthews will make his Major League Baseball debut tonight for Minnesota.
