Twins fall 4-1 in 10 innings to the Rays
Richie Palacios delivered the decisive blow with a two-run homer in a three-run 10th inning, lifting the Tampa Bay Rays to a 4–1 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday.
Junior Caminero also went deep for Tampa Bay, which capped a grueling nine-game, 11-day season-opening road trip with a milestone: the 900th career managerial win for Kevin Cash.
The game remained tight until extra innings. Leading off the 10th, Palacios crushed his first homer of the season to right field on just the second pitch from Justin Topa. Later in the inning, Caminero drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in another run and extend the Rays’ lead.
On the mound, Bryan Baker earned the win after striking out two in a clean ninth inning. Kevin Kelly closed things out with a scoreless 10th for his second save.
Minnesota struggled offensively once again, managing just three hits for the second straight game. Matt Wallner provided the lone highlight with a home run, but the Twins’ bats remained cold, with the team hitting just .192 overall.
Caminero’s earlier homer in the fourth inning came on an unusually low pitch from Simeon Woods Richardson—just 1.14 feet off the ground—making it one of the lowest-hit home runs by a Rays player since Statcast tracking began in 2015.
Despite the loss, Woods Richardson delivered a solid outing, allowing one run on five hits while striking out four over 6 2/3 innings. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay’s Nick Martinez was dominant, giving up just one hit—the Wallner homer—across six innings while striking out four. He became the first Rays pitcher since Jake Faria in 2017 to record quality starts in his first two appearances with the team.
For Minnesota, Byron Buxton continued to struggle, going hitless in four at-bats and extending his slump to 0-for-19.
