Weekend College Sports Update…Tommies, Gophers…
(Minneapolis, MN) — Dawson Garcia scored 23 points and Brennan Rigsby added 14, helping Minnesota (6-3) build a 28-point second-half lead on its way to a 79-62 win over Bethune-Cookman (2-6) at Williams Arena. Garcia made 8-of-15 field goals, including a pair of three-pointers, and was 5-of-5 at the free throw line to reach 20 or more points for the sixth time this season. He added five rebounds, four assists, two blocked shots and a steal in just 28 minutes. Rigsby was 4-of-8 from behind the three-point arc, while adding four rebounds and two assists. The Gophers are home again on Wednesday night when they host Michigan State at 7:30 P-M from Williams Arena.
(undated) — The University of St. Thomas men’s basketball team fell on the road on Sunday as they dropped a 69-65 decision to Milwaukee. They’ll be right back to work tonight though when they host Chicago State at Schoenecker Arena in St. Paul with a 7 P-M tip. The women’s team had better luck however yesterday with a 75-71 win over U-I-C. That’s three straight wins for the Tommies. They’re back on the floor at home on Wednesday against Northern Colorado at 7 P-M.
(Minneapolis, MN) — No. 7 Minnesota (4-0) won nine of the 10 matches, including six ranked bouts, as it trounced No. 17 South Dakota State (1-2) by a score of 30-3 Sunday afternoon at First Bank & Trust Arena in Brookings, S.D. After the last two duals were decided by a combined nine points, Minnesota left little doubt Sunday as it won the first six matches and ended up holding the Jackrabbits to their lowest point total in the series since 1974 (31-2). Minnesota now leads the all-time series with South Dakota State, 29-5, including 13 straight wins. The 13-match win streak ties for Minnesota’s second-longest active streak, along with 13 straight wins over Michigan State. Minnesota has also won 10 straight duals dating back to last season. During the current streak, Minnesota has outscored opponents 329-54 and hasn’t allowed more than 12 points in any contest. >>
(undated) — The Golden Gopher men’s hockey team put up a four goal third period on Saturday to beat Alaska 5-2 on Saturday night at 3-M Arena at Mariucci. The Gophers (13-2-1 overall) are now 5-0-1 at home this season and will host Michigan for a pair next Friday and Saturday. Elsewhere around Minnesota this weekend, Bemidji State split a pair with North Dakota including a 2-1 win at home on Friday night before falling in a shootout in Grand Forks on Saturday. The Tommies were swept by Lake State and in Augustana took a pair from Northern Michigan. In the W-C-H-A this weekend, Minnesota State took a pair from Dartmouth, St. Cloud State skated to a win and a tie with Union, St. Thomas gained a tie with Penn State on Saturday after falling on Friday night and UMD crushed Vermont for a pair of wins by a combined 13-1 margin.
