Will Brennan hits walk-off 3-run homer in the 9th, Guardians beat Twins 5-2
CLEVELAND – In a thrilling ninth inning showdown, Brennan stepped up to the plate against Jhoan Duran with two outs and the bases loaded, turning the game on its head. Despite a controversial call earlier in the inning, which had appeared to end the Guardians’ hopes, a video review overturned the decision, keeping their chances alive. With a first-pitch curveball, Brennan launched a three-run homer over the right-field wall, securing a dramatic 5-2 victory for the Cleveland Guardians over the Minnesota Twins.
Reflecting on his game-winning hit, Brennan shared, “I’ve been waiting for that moment all season. When they intentionally walked Nails [Josh Naylor] to get to me, I took it personally. It was time to step up, and thankfully, I got a good pitch to hit.”
Prior to Brennan’s heroics, the Twins had mounted a late rally in the ninth inning against the Guardians’ All-Star closer, Emmanuel Clase. Despite not registering a hit, they managed to tie the game at 2-2, exploiting a series of defensive mishaps by Cleveland. A tense atmosphere enveloped the ballpark as the game hung in the balance.
The series of events left Duran, the Twins’ pitcher, reflecting on his decision-making. He admitted, “I wanted to go with the fastball to Brennan, but ultimately, I didn’t shake off the curveball call from catcher Christian Vázquez. In hindsight, I should have trusted my instincts.”
The Guardians’ victory capped off a dominating three-game sweep of the Twins, reaffirming their position atop the AL Central standings. Despite the Twins’ valiant effort, including a standout performance by Chris Paddack on the mound, the Guardians refused to be denied.
Looking ahead, both teams prepare for their next matchups, with the Twins sending RHP Pablo López to face the Nationals, while the Guardians turn to RHP Ben Lively in their series opener against the Mets. As the season progresses, each game brings new challenges and opportunities for these competitive teams.
