xAI Challenges Minnesota’s AI Image Law

Elon Musk’s artificial-intelligence company, xAI, is suing Minnesota over a new law targeting technology used to create realistic intimate images of people without their consent.

The federal lawsuit names Attorney General Keith Ellison and argues the law is overly broad and violates the First Amendment. The company says its policies already prohibit users from creating nonconsensual intimate images.

The law prohibits access to and promotion of services designed to digitally alter images to make people appear nude. It also allows substantial financial penalties and civil lawsuits against violators.

Minnesota lawmakers approved the measure by wide bipartisan margins following concerns about social-media photos being used to create realistic sexual images without permission. The law is scheduled to take effect August 1.
